India, formally the Republic of India (Hindi: भारत गणराज्य, Urdu: جمہوریہ بھارت ) is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second most-populous country and the world's largest democracy. India is bordered by Pakistan in the west, China, Nepal and Bhutan in the north and Bangladesh and Mayanmar to the east. Sri Lanka and the Maldives fall adjacent within sea territory.
One of the oldest-settled countries in the world, the modern-day India like Pakistan, has been part of the greater Indian subcontinent (or South Asia) since the beginning, a region which has been recognised for much of its long history in the areas of science, commerce, trade, culture and politics. The four Indian religions, Hinduism, Bhuddism, Jainism and Sikhism all accredit their origin from South Asia while Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism arrived later in the 1st century; this greatly shaped the region's diverse culture, of which India along with Pakistan and other South Asian countries, has largely been a recipient of.
